It's so nice to see a younger member of our community contributing. Are you a local Calvertonian or an expat?

Good on you! I hope you sell your Walkman. Have you lived in Calverton all your life or have you recently moved there? What do you think to some of the stories about 'the olden days' in the village?

The pits would have closed down before you were born. It was a very different place in the 1960s, everybody's dad worked at the pit and most mums stayed at home although a few worked at local factories sewing, and some worked as dinner ladies in the schools or in the local shops. Everybody knew each other and we played in the streets, roamed Oxton Woods, picked blackberries down near the splashback and the Lido and up Georges Hill and our mums would make them into a blackberry pie and we'd all have a piece of it. It's sad that kids can't do those things any more because of the traffic, the weirdos, society being what it is today...
I had no idea that Calverton had as much history as it does either, although I did know that the name and the settlement went back to Saxon times. My grandparents always pronounced it 'Carverton' which apparently was the old name because it was where there was a calves market or something.
I don't know if you went to Sir John Sherbrooke, but I was one of the first students to go there when it first opened. In the assembly hall there was a mural on the wall which was taken from some brass rubbings in St Wilfrids church of Saxon village people working the land.

How's it going Thidmos? Have you had any bites yet? This is cheaper than putting your stuff on e-bay.
