Well it's been a long time since I contributed to my Green Fingers thread....
I have started in the vegie garden for this year and have started planting some of my usual favourites. This year there will be a new addition to my vegie plot - the cucumber!! After last years success at growing cute courgettes (and mammoth marrows!), perfect pumpkins, super spuds, luscious lettuce, rude raddish, beautiful beans, terrific tomatoes and oniony onions, I thought I'd see how the cucumber would survive in my soil.. watch this space!!
Any other keen gardeners out there, please feel free to 'dig in' to this thread!

Potty - what sort of cucumbers are you thinking of growing? I like lebanese cucumbers. They are a bit smaller than the common ones and so you can use a whole one in a salad not just slice up a few and then have to store the left over which can go a bit soggy. You can also leave the skin on for a bit of colour as it's quite edible. The mediterraneans like the really long ones that they call telegraph cucumbers (I don't know if it's because of the length or whether you can communicate with the digestive side effects). Have you seen apple cucumbers? They are about the same size as a granny smith apple, looks and tastes like a regular cucumber but you don't get many slices per fruit. Lastly we've had some little baby ones that I love because there's just enough for one and you can eat them skin and all for a bit of a snack. They're not available as seeds or seedlings as they are grown to be sold in supermarkets and they're called "cukes" (cute cucumbers).
This place we've moved to is lovely because we don't have to do any of the boring stuff like mow the grass or do weeding. It's all done for us. For those people who actually want to do some gardening though there will eventually be a communal garden. Most want to grow some vegies as the GEC (Global Economic Crisis) hits and they are on pensions or self-funded retirees.

Hey Bobby's Girl. Lebanese Cucumbers? sounds a bit naughty to me, you connected with the drug trade?

I don't know why they're called Lebanese cucumbers except the Lebs like them. Maybe that's what they grow in Lebanon. We also have Lebanese zucchinis (courgettes to you) which are smaller and a lighter colour than the other zucchinis, and Lebanese eggplant (aubergine) which is also smaller and more of a lilac colour than the deep purple of the regular variety. The Lebs stuff them. Maybe that's how they smuggle the drugs?

Bobby's Girl, I'm not sure what type it is. Just a common cucumber I think. I just picked up a packet of seeds that said 'cucumber'! lol! I'll find out when I next go over to Calverton (thats where I grow everything in the back garden at my mothers)
The place you live at now sounds lovely. I have a cousin in Florida who lives in a similar kind of place. I visited it and it was really nice. Growing your own produce is getting very popular over here because everyone is having to tighten the old purse strings. I find it very fulfilling and of course, the produce tastes so much better than stuff bought at the supermarket.
We went over to the garden this morning as my bunny rabbit had to be put to sleep this week and so we buried her over there. We planted a bramley apple tree over the grave. I'm looking forward to seeing that grow in the coming years. I just hope it doesn't start growing bunny ears on it instead of apples!!

Have now started picking my runner beans and very nice they are too.
Loganberry and plum jam has been made and I also have some plums fermenting nicely into wine. Next lot of wine will be wheat plum from the hedgerows!
