I'll be there, in the spirits at least! Can also recommend the food at Oscars - different style but equally good. Most of the pubs/clubs in Calvo serve OK food - they wouldn't survive long if they didn't these days. Get yourself a copy of the local rag - The Echo - when you finally hit town - it's full of useful info and gives you a flavour of what's going on - plus continue to check this Forum - it's amazing what we come up with sometimes - not all of which is necessarily true but then we do enjoy a good gossip!

Calverton is a lovely place to live Kate, never mind what some people say about it on here.

Calverton is a lovely place to live Kate, never mind what some people say about it on here. Reminds me of a famous quote in the 1970 movie Kelly's Heroes.........Oddball (Played by Donald Sutherland) "Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? ...Always with the negative waves Moriarty, always with the negative waves." Pity the poor devils, who live in the REALLY deprived areas of the world like Africa.......and the like.........hold on a minute, Somalia is reputedly the cheapest place on Earth to buy a pint of Lager (only 10p apparently) not all bad news then.....

Hi, New user here....
found it cos it appears a lot of my ancestors lived in Calverton in the 19th centruy and before.
The family name is Taylor and it seems we were the village chippies - joiners this is not potato fryers....
Indeed, this is a big coincidence as I am a time served joiner and one of my sons is following in my footsteps.
So...if you have the surname Taylor, Worthington, Baguley, Colishaw, Fallowell or Thurman, we may be related...

Hello! My Grandfathers name was Fred Baguley Smith. His father, George Baguley. There is a stone laid in the wall of the old Methodist Chapel on Main St, which was placed by my great grandfather, George Baguley. He was a lay preacher there.
